Queens Of Geek Book Review | sprinkledpages

Aha, I’m ready, I’m here, all set to talk about one of the cutest book EVER which also happens to be one of my top reads of this year!

I was really drawn into Queens Of Geek from the bright and fun cover and the adorable premise PLUS the rave reviews online where people were full on gushing about it! I read it as an ARC and then HAD to get the finished copy because it was just too pretty to resist!

About the book.

Book: Queens Of Geek
Author: Jen Wilde
Pages: 288
Publisher: Swoon Reads
Synopsis: When BFFs Charlie, Taylor and Jamie go to SupaCon, they know it’s going to be a blast. What they don’t expect is for it to change their lives forever.

Charlie likes to stand out. SupaCon is her chance to show fans she’s over her public breakup with co-star, Reese Ryan. When Alyssa Huntington arrives as a surprise guest, it seems Charlie’s long-time crush on her isn’t as one-sided as she thought.

While Charlie dodges questions about her personal life, Taylor starts asking questions about her own.

Taylor likes to blend in. Her brain is wired differently, making her fear change. And there’s one thing in her life she knows will never change: her friendship with Jamie—no matter how much she may secretly want it to. But when she hears about the Queen Firestone SupaFan Contest, she starts to rethink her rules on playing it safe. (source)
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Thank you to Pan Macmillan Australia for providing me a review copy however this is an honest review and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

{ writing }

One of my favourite things about Queens Of Geek is how short of a read it is. I loved how it was kept simple and sweet with not overflowery language or an abundance of often unnecessary description! I also loved how easy it was to get into this book! I read it within a few hours just because of how addictive it was! It’s great to help you get out of a book slump as well!

{ idea }

I felt this stood out from other contemporaries, at least for me. I liked the whole ‘superhero convention’ vibe, which is SO rare to see in books and as an avid superhero fan, I love reading about it in books! It was also different in terms of the types of friendships these three characters had, the AMOUNT of diversity (which I loved!) and in general the feel good vibe you took away from the book!

But for me, the most important part was the fantastic representation I saw! It covers social anxiety, autism, f/f relationships, being a PoC, body image with an under-represented body type and how media views males vs females.

Some may look at this list and say it’s ‘diversity stuffing’ and ‘there’s too much too be real’ and ‘that’s not realistic’ but who says a person who is marginalised is only marginalised in one way? I feel like many YA authors who do write diversely sometimes miss the point of the character having more than one ‘diverse aspect’ and I feel this is something Jen Wilde did SO WELL!

{ plot }

Surprisingly, this kept me engaged and entertained the entire time! I find most contemporaries don’t really have a plot as they are mostly focused on characters and while this was similar, there were undercurrents of plot development too with the cosplay competition and what would happen with Charlie’s career!

I know a lot of people stick firmly AWAY from contemporaries because of the lack of plot but PLEASE, this book wasn’t like that AT ALL and it’s so great and worth reading!

{ characters }

Aha, the characters! I loved them ALL so much! They were cute and relatable and so realistic and funny! I especially related to Taylor because while my social anxiety isn’t as severe as hers, I do definitely get quite anxious easily, especially in social situations.

I loved the romance in this too! It isn’t instalove, THANK GOD FOR THAT, and it’s really cute and realistic! I know I’ve used the word ‘cute’ over and over in this entire review but I COULDN’T HELP IT. THIS REALLY IS THE CUTEST, MOST ADORABLE BOOK EVER.

It’ll make you feel like you’ve been split open and stuffed with sunshine and then sewed back up so all that sunshine just warms your heart.

{ finally… }

Basically, just read this gem of a book!

I've been in a terrible slump this year and have seen a significant dip in the amount of books I read but this one sounds like a perfect book to binge read in the sun. The concept of this book sounds quirky and entertaining and I love that it covers a broad range of topics.
