Do I Like Pirate Books? The Answer, Is Yes!

Daughter Of The Pirate King Book Review | sprinkledpages

I have never been a huge fan of pirates, if I’m being really honest. I didn’t see what was so appealing about them, especially since they are well known thieves and in some cases murders. I have seen the first Pirates Of The Caribbean but haven’t seen the others, and as a child, Peter Pan was a story I avoided because there was nothing appealing about a guy with a hook for an arm.

Going into Daughter Of The Pirate King, I didn’t really have high expectations – not because it didn’t sound interesting – but because pirates were a ‘meh’ for me. And this book totally changed my mind!

WHAT I LIKED:

  • Pirates. Yes these pirates were thieving and plundering but I quite liked how the book was set in the background of pirates and the ocean and thieving, murdering, anti-heroes with a questionable taste in a career
  • Sassy female leads. I will never, EVER be over this trope! When done well, this can be so entertaining to read and Alosa was exactly that!
  • Hate to love trope. I am such a huge sucker for this and I love seeing the relationship develop and pan out!
  • Unqiue! Because how many books do you know are set on a pirate ship in amongst pirates with a badass female pirate as a lead? GIRL POWER!
  • Quick and easy to read. I swear, books that are quick and easy to read get an extra 0.5 star because I FEEL SO ACCOMPLISHED when I’ve finished and short attention span + growing TBR = DNFing if the book takes too long
  • Plot had lots of twists and turns. I always crave a good plot in a fantasy and I was glad this delivered it to me because I was a little apprehensive seeing the blurb didn’t sound very complex
  • Alosa’s manipulation was lots of fun to watch unfold. I liked seeing her plan in action and how she laid out each part of her plan carefully! I thought she was a pretty clever protagonist and I always love one of those!

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • The plot was often repetitive. This was often quite frustrating because I’d be hoping for a new twist and then…it was the same old thing.
  • The writing wasn’t as complex. I know this was good for keeping it short and simple but there were times where this felt a lot like middle grade, but with murder
  • The ending got quite rushed. It felt like a whole lot of action happened at the end and then everything was too abrupt. I know there is going to be a next book in this series so I presume it was left like that to make room for the next book but I was still let down by the ending
  • I needed more character development. I felt the characters started the same and ended the same and for characters that were quite anti-hero(ish) I wanted more in terms of progression and growth

I feel like this is one of those books I enjoyed while I read, but won’t end up remembering in the long run because it didn’t leave a lasting impression! But I find those types of books are great too because they’re quick and light and easy and perfect for getting out of a dreaded book slump!

  2. I rated this one similarly. It was a lot of fun, sure, but I also had some minor issues with the characterizations. But I can't wait to read the sequel because all-female pirate crew!! I'm glad you enjoyed the book overall, Anisha! :)

  4. Lovely review, Anisha! I think you might convince me that I need to read more pirate books, especially that one ahah :) Also, I LOVE the hate to love trope, it's one of my favorites. I'm just a bit sad to hear you didn't find too much character development in that one.

  5. Yess, I absolutely LOVE Pirates of the Caribbean. As a matter of fact, I'm a sucker for most anything involving pirates <3 I'm not too sure about this read, though. Alosa has always sounded like too much of a Mary-Sue for me to stomach. But if it converted a pirate-disliker such as yourself, I may have to give it a shot!

  7. This sounds like it may be a really fun summer read? I usually go for books with amazing writing and character development, but I wouldn't mind a quick, action packed novel for the beach. And I for one really like pirates. Peter Pan was a childhood favorite for sure. Awesome review, Anisha!

  9. I felt the same way when I read this one! I had no idea if I liked pirate books, but I figured maybe not because I don't really like pirate movies and such? But I DID like this book! And I liked the pirate aspect too, and then I liked a couple of other pirate books, so yep, guess I like them too haha. Great review!

  10. I'm honestly in the same boat as you. I've never cared for pirates, mostly for the same reasons as you. So I've never watched Pirates of the Caribbean. I saw the trailer for the latest one, and whilst it looks amazing, I won't ever watch it (maybe) because it just isn't my scene. But I'm very intrigued with this book so I might give it a go. Love you review!
